As temperatures rise and ecosystems shift, the United Nations has declared 2025 as the “International Year of Glaciers”. This global appeal emphasizes the crucial function glaciers serve in controlling Earth's climate and the increasing need to protect them.

At Hypershell, we believe that innovation paves the way to addressing global challenges. This year, we are proud to partner with a leading scientific research team, undertaking a glacier expedition in one of Earth’s most challenging environments. 

Supporting this expedition reinforces our commitment to sustainable exploration, enabling scientific progress without compromising safety. We are dedicated to climate action by contributing to vital environmental research, and we advocate for human-machine collaboration by pushing the boundaries of what explorers can achieve in partnership with advanced technology.

The Mission At Hand

In partnership with the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the China Association for Scientific Expeditions, Hypershell will support a scientific research expedition to the Tibetan Plateau. This mission, titled Ice Dome Frontier, is part of the larger Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and will take place in the Buqu River area of the Tanggula Mountains in August 2025.

We aim to assist researchers studying glacier retreat and climate adaptation in one of Earth’s harshest environments while enhancing our exoskeleton technology through practical testing. By providing wearable support that boosts mobility and reduces fatigue in high-altitude, freezing conditions, we strive to make research safer and more effective. At the same time, collecting valuable data and user insights will help us refine future designs, ensuring our technology evolves to meet the most demanding challenges.

As glaciers dissolve, the consequences impact coastal urban areas, agricultural regions, and ecosystems globally. That’s why a team of climate scientists is preparing to explore deep into the heart of the frozen world, braving freezing cold, dangerous terrain, and low-oxygen conditions. Their mission? To investigate, quantify, and understand how these frozen giants are reacting to our evolving planet and the implications for our future. And we’re with them every step of the journey.

These observations enable us to better understand human resilience in some of the planet’s most extreme environments. They help us refine our systems to tackle increasingly difficult tasks and provide valuable insights that will guide the development of the next generation of wearable technology, designed not only for exploration but also for crisis management and other demanding work. This means that every step taken in the cold feeds into smarter, more adaptive tools.

Testing Technology in Crucial Areas 

Sub-zero temperatures, powerful winds, challenging terrains, and the need to carry substantial equipment create the perfect environment for testing. This journey allows us to assess battery efficiency in cold environments, examine structural durability against the forces of snow, wind, and elevation, and gather first-hand user input to enhance upcoming versions of our exoskeleton technology. If our exoskeletons can perform in this environment, they can function effectively in any situation, whether it is mountain rescues, Arctic expeditions, or disaster aid.
